At Blackwell Primary School, we follow the National Curriculum but we are aware that all children are individuals and so we follow the children's interests whenever we can, providing them with the skills and interests for their adult life. Whenever possible we provide real life, practical experiences for our children which they might not have the opportunity to access out of school. Through our curriculum and school life we aim to make a difference to every child.
We have considerable success with the teaching of reading in this school through quality first teaching and the reading intervention, Reading Recovery. We believe children should have access to a range of reading materials which will interest them and so we use different reading schemes.
All children from Y1 to Y6 follow National Curriculum programmes of study for English, Mathematics, Science, Art & Design, Computing, Design & Technology, Geography, History, Languages, Music, Physical Education.
In September 2014, a new National Curriculum was introduced but for the 2014 - 2015 academic year pupils in years 2 and 6 will be taught the current programmes of study in English, Maths and Science; new standard assessment tests for these subjects were introduced in 2016. The teaching of RE follows the Derbyshire Agreed Syllabus 2014 - 2019.
A variety of teaching methods are used.
